When the weaving was done, I finally believed in the magic of transformation.
The rug of life, thread by thread, little by little, gently taught me the courage to change. With a soft slope, without battle or bloodshed, it gifted me bravery
And when the weaving was complete, I found myself closer to who I am.

WE ARE NOT CARPETS versteht sich als Versuch, einen Bruch in die gewohnte Ordnung zu tragen – eine Irritation zwischen dem bloßen Teppich und dem Teppich, den die Weber*innen mit ihrem eigenen Namen, ihrer Geschichte, ihren Farben, Mustern und ihrer Ästhetik verknüpft.
Es ist eine Unterbrechung der Ordnung, durch die das System der Teppichproduktion und des Teppichhandels die Weberin zu einer bloßen Maschine degradiert hat, und zugleich eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Jahrhunderte andauernden Marginalisierung und Ausbeutung derjenigen, die weben.
Dieser Bruch beginnt mit einer Frage:
Was wäre, wenn Sie statt der in Auftrag gegebenen und vom Markt vorgegebenen Motive Ihre eigene Geschichte weben würden?
WE ARE NOT CARPETS – I tell you my story ist eine gemeinsame Ausstellung von Weaver Artists und Forschenden und präsentiert neu entstandene, einzigartig und zutiefst persönliche Teppiche. Die Installation lässt die Teppiche zusammen mit den Geschichten ihrer Schöpfer*innen in einer poetischen und filmischen Weise erfahrbar werden. Die Teppiche sind das Ergebnis des gemeinsamen Forschungsprojekts „Weaving Memories“, das Weber*innen aus der Region Nord-Khorasan im Iran eine Plattform bietet, ihre Geschichten zu erzählen – indem ihr Handwerk nicht nur als Kunst, sondern auch als Medium des Geschichtenerzählens Gestalt gewinnt.
Nord-Khorasan hat eine lange Tradition der Teppich- und Kelimweberei. Neun Weber*innen aus dieser Region haben am Projekt „Weaving Memories“ teilgenommen. Davon sind vier Weaver Arrtists an der aktuellen Installation in Siegen beteiligt:

WE ARE NOT CARPETS bietet Besucher*innen die Möglichkeit, mehr über das Leben und Handwerk des Teppichwebens zu erfahren und die globalen und lokalen Zusammenhänge zu verstehen. Die Ausstellung wird von verschiedene Vermittlungsformaten begleitet.
Das Forschungsprojekt „Weaving Memories“ präsentierte die erste Installation an Teppichen und Geschichten unter dem Titel WE ARE NOT CARPETS vom 27. September 2024 bis zum 5. Januar 2025 im Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Köln. → Webseite
Die zweite Installation wird vom 6. bis 31. Oktober 2025 im POOOL, dem Kulturprojektraum der Gruppe 3/55 e.V. in Siegen (Löhrstraße 3), zu sehen sein. → Webseite
Die Ausstellung WE ARE NOT CARPETS wird organisiert vom DFG-geförderten Sonderforschungsbereich 1187 „Medien der Kooperation“ der Universität Siegen in Kooperation mit Tahereh Aboofazeli (University of Cologne) und Arjang Omrani (University of Gent).

We Are Not Carpets is an attempt to bring a dissensus to the scene –
a dissensus between a carpet and a Carpet, once the weaver binds it with her own name, story, colors, patterns and aesthetic.
It is an interruption of the order through which the regime of carpet production and trade has diminished the weaver to a mere machine, while confronting the centuries-long marginalization and exploitation of those who weave.
This rupture begins with a question:
What if, instead of weaving the commissioned and market-designed motifs, you were to weave your own story?
The joint exhibition by artist-weavers and researchers, “WE ARE NOT CARPETS – I Tell You My Story,” presents newly created, unique personal carpets and their stories, which are experienced in a poetic and cinematic way. The carpets are the result of the collaborative research project “Weaving Memories” which provides weavers from the North Khorasan region in Iran with a platform to tell their stories by transforming their craft into a medium of storytelling and as works of art.
The weavers of North Khorasan have a long-standing tradition in carpet and kilim weaving. Nine weavers from this region have participated in the Weaving Memories project. Among those, four artist weavers are taking part in this installation:

WE ARE NOT CARPETS offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the lives and craft of carpet weavers and to understand the global and local challenges of the exploitative economic and social system. At the same time, the behind the carpets and how global economic exhibition sheds light on the colonial and capitalist entanglements of exploitation that continue to have an impact today.
WE ARE NOT CARPETS invites reflection on the hidden stories, connections, colonial history, and cultural perceptions that have shaped their production and meaning. Various engagement formats accompany the exhibition.
